The purpose of the BSP Professional Development series is to provide behavior support professionals opportunities to advance their knowledge of PBS and brush up on topics covered during our Foundations of PBS course. Next up for the series is Proactive Strategies - How to Stay One Step Ahead. This free training is a great opportunity to review and advance your understanding of proactive strategies in order to develop more effective positive behavior support plans.

Enormous amounts of time and effort are often spent responding to and trying to manage challenging behavior when it occurs. However, a number of modifications to an individual's daily life - the physical environment, the nature of work tasks, the ways others interact with them - can prevent the onset of challenging behavior, and promote the use of more positive and healthy behavior. This training outlines several strategies to eliminate or modify environmental events and interactions in a variety of different settings. It also highlights how to help individuals adjust to and cope with situations that might be challenging for them, and how to best set them up for success when learning new skills.

After attending, you will be able to:

  • Define and differentiate proactive strategies from other types of interventions.
  • Create three proactive strategies based on identified antecedents.
  • Describe three steps to teach proactive strategies (according to Minahan, 2013).
